Course Description:
Introduction to Graphic Communication is a foundation course that serves as an introduction to the drafting and design field. Emphasis is placed on basic drafting fundamentals, geometric construction, fundamentals of Computer-Aided Drafting, and multi-view drawings. Students learn drafting techniques through the study of geometric construction at which time they are introduced to computer-aided drafting and design. The standards are aligned with current drafting and design standards.

Objectives:
The students will:

1      Identify disciplines related to engineering drawing and design professions.
2      Demonstrate knowledge and skills of computer operations.
3      Create technical freehand sketches.
4      Demonstrate Proper lettering techniques.
5      Demonstrate the use of proper line types.
6      Demonstrate the ability to read and draw using the proper scale.
7      Create and dimension single view drawings while applying geometric construction.
8      Use orthographic projection to create and dimension multi-view drawings.

Course Outline:
·         Drawing & Designing by Hand
·         Freehand Sketching
·         Hand Lettering
·         Orthographic Projection
·         Isometric Views
·         Career Exploration
·         Autodesk AutoCAD
·         User Interface
·         Produce Plans

Projects:
  •      Hand Drawn Plans:
  •      CAD Drawn Plans:
  •      Portfolios: Throughout the Semester, students will add documents to, and maintain for constant evaluation, a digital and a hand drawn portfolio.

Behavioral Expectations:
Students are expected to come to class Focused. That Focus will be demonstrated by behavior that is generally described as:

·                 Cooperative (teamwork- respect-helpfulness)
·                 Attentive (listening-following instructions-alertness)
·                 Productive (diligent-efficient-organized)
·                 Responsible (careful-serious-dependable)

Equipment List:
Students will need the following equipment to complete the tasks in this course:

·                 Computer: PC or Mac that meets or exceeds the following requirements:
o   Processor: 2.9 GHz
o   RAM: 8 GB
o   Hard Drive Space: 6 GB required
·                  Mechanical Pencil
·                  Large Eraser
·                  Triangular Architectural Scale (Should be able to find on amazon for $6 - $7)

I can arrange to provide an extra laptop for use in class if there are any needs.

Software Resources:
Students enrolled in this course are eligible for a free download, and a three-year license to the complete Autodesk Design Suite. The software Programs included are: AutoCADÒ, Autodesk RevitÒ, Auto CADÒ InventorÒ, and AutodeskÒ 3ds MaxÒ. A single user license for this software can cost as much as $3,000.00 per year. Students who are serious about learning CAD stand to benefit tremendously from this free software access.

Each student will need to create an Autodesk ID to gain access to AutoCAD from the following link:

Please have software downloaded and installed prior to attending class. The file is over 6 GB so please plan accordingly.
